Make Cd Drive Open and Close Continuously Remote Computer
Disc Drive keeps opening
One of my user's disc drive opens when you turn on the machine, and if you try to close it it just pops back open. I removed the original disk drive with a new one and it is still not staying closed. The strange part is I the user is new and I just moved that machine to his cubical and the machine never did this before it was moved.
There is no program that is making it do it. It does it right away on the computer's boot.
It is running Windows 7.
Please help.
I GOT IT!.. I hope.
We have 3 spare disk drives. I tried everyone that we had. For some reason the last one I tried didn't pop open until I hit the eject button. Completely installed it and it never tried to open on it's own.
I have no clue why three others opened and this one didn't. If anyone knows the reason for that please let me know otherwise its fixed.
..for now.
Thank you everyone who replied!

It sounds like it's a bad cd-rom. I would try replacing it with another cd rom and see if another one does the same thing.

He mentioned he already tried that in his original post. I don't have any other suggestions, what a weird one! Maybe try a different SATA port on the motherboard?

Are you able to use a different cable to connect the disc drive? Is it a desktop or laptop?

Opens during post or during windows startup?

There was no disc in the tray when it keeps opening. I replaced the disk drive and on first boot up with no disc in it, it would not stay shut.

reset the bios and see if that stops it?

Along with this, are you plugging the cable into a different port on the mobo?

Check the task scheduler and startup under MSCONFIG. I bet someone put a CD eject script in there for you...
Batchfile
Set oWMP = CreateObject("WMPlayer.OCX.7" ) Set colCDROMs = oWMP.cdromCollection if colCDROMs.Count >= 1 then For i = 0 to colCDROMs.Count - 1 colCDROMs.Item(i).Eject Next ' cdrom End If Set oWMP = Nothing Set colCDROMs = Nothing

This is great. I remember this prank...

The first thing I checked for was the prank. I know there is a file you can put in windows start up that causes it to open but I can't find any trace of that.
I have tried a different SATA port on the motherboard, that didn't change anything either.
This is a desktop.
And it opens on POST boot not Windows boot.

I had this issue with a Lenovo W510. It apparently is a common issue. I think it has to do with a controller issue.

xbox 360 drives are known for doing this, most likely the magnet in the top of the housing has come unglued.
when you close the drawer, the spindle rises, it has a metal plate on the end that touches the magnet and thus hold the spindle in place. if this magnet cannot hold the spindle, the spindle falls tripping the drive open mechanism. the magnet is the only thing that holds the spindle in place, the spindle must be held in place in order for the drive to function, so this is by design as to let you know there is a problem. i think originally this was used to alert of a foreign object in the drive.
I am assuming desktop and I just saw that a second drive was tried. so maybe not the same problem.

Well it must be some sort of worm because Cd Trays are opening everywhere in my office all of the sudden ; ) . Man I was getting bored for a sec.

Did you try to make a BIOS/UEFI update? Maybe it will solve the problem. Also check if there are any jumpers on the motherboard (or the drive) that should not be "closed". Use the motherboard manual and check each switch and jumper to the default position. Or change the motherboard, or return the PC...

Okay. In that case, since the problem seems to happen on POST, I have a very longshot theory. If you remove the drive from the computer and reattach it in the same manner while still outside of the case and making sure that it is not touching the case or any conductive material that the case is also touching, does it still happen?
My longshot theory here is that since the computer's power use will spike when powering on, I wonder if there is some bad grounding going on here, and the drive is receiving a little jolt that is triggering the drive to open.

also, try it will only the power plugged in, not the data cable.

Sounds like a short is occurring since the issue didn't occur until moving the PC. The easy solution is unplug the power to the cd drive, how often do you use that these days anyway?

I will try these ideas as soon as I get a chance with it and reply back the results.
That is the worst part he is barely ever at his desk and this is the first time he has needed it.
I gave him an external disk drive for a temporary solution, I just want to figure out what is happening so I know it isn't just me.

I had a Dell laptop once that kept doing that. However, it only did it about once every two or three days and I never actually was able to track down what caused it to happen. I'd just be sitting there working, sometimes on the computer in question, sometimes not, and I'd hear a little click as the drive ejected.
It was very annoying, to say the least.

I have seen this on older laptops that have been abused. Possible user wound. Replace the drive.

Its not a laptop, it is a desktop.

Is there a plate that is on the case, that the disk drive sits behind? (flaps open when ejected) Maybe it's the plate that's touching or pressing on the eject button, which will cause it to infinite loop.

I would check into connecting the drive while it's not in the case. A short or other physical force could be causing this. Also, try swapping the SATA cable.

Yeah another way of troubleshooting my previous suggestion is to just leave the side of the case opened, lay the drive next to the case, but keep it plugged to the power (you can plug in the SATA cable to...but that's not needed in this test).

-
If you're sure that its not the prank, have you changed the SATA data cable and also a different power connector?
thumb_up thumb_down
-
Pull the power cable out and put a sticker on the case reminding you this has been done. Do everything over the network unless you really need the CD in which case plug it back in again temporarily.
This doesn't "solve" the issue but it lets you get on with more important stuff.
Who really uses CDs/DVDs anyway? (Users ripping music does not count!)

I would check the enclosure for anything stuck or damaged. Most likely something is forcing the drive upon upon start because it is not properly seated.

I have a desktop machine in my sever room that does the same thing only it's not on boot, but just when it is on and sitting idle. Started about three months or so ago. CD drawer pops open, I close it and it just pops right back open again. But I found if I apply just a little bit of pressure against it when it tries to open again, it will fail to open and usually stops trying to open. But only for a time, then it starts again, but I don't know what triggers it. While it's annoying, it's never bothered me enough to look closer at it. I will as soon as I can find the time. If I figure anything out I'll post it.Good luck with it.

Was it installed using a cd-rom to boot from network or something else? try removing the cd-rom from the boot order in the BIOS

Lots and lots of tape, wrap it around the tower, that will keep it closed. :)

Duct tape! haha..but seriously, I'd just disconnect it, who needs CD/DVD anymore? We don't even purchase hardware with optical drives in them.

Is this happening before Windows starts to load or after? Does it do it in safe mode?
Have you tried keeping power but removing the SATA (or IDE?) cable from the CD-ROM to see if it still opens. Obviously this isn't a fix, but if the application of power itself is causing it to open, this would tell you.
When creating the recovery disks, doesn't that auto-eject the disk?
You've checked autorun in the registry (or MSConfig Startup tab)?

I just had the opposite experience..a dvd-rw drive that would not open. I replaced the drive and it still would not open. I then replaced the SATA cable and the problem was eliminated.(should have done the cable first..K.I.S.S.)

Sounds like a bad cd drive, but have you changed the boot sequence in the BIOS? It may be looking to boot from a CD first!

Try booting Linux from USB, like Ubuntu or Mint. If tray continues to eject problem is mobo. If tray does not eject, problem is Windows. Good luck.

there's a mischievous script out there somewhere that causes this. could be a prank.

Is the drive securely in the tray?
Screws tightened down?
Do you have one that has a trap door type thing that you have to take the front face off of when you install the drive? If you have the trapdoor type, it could be that the drive is too far forward and inadvertently opening on it's own. I've seen this before. Besides what has already been mentioned it could be a bad/faulty drive.

I tried plugging it in not touching the case and it still opened as soon as it was plugged in.
I tried booting without the SATA cable plugged in and it still opened.
I highly doubt anyone is trying to pull a prank but just to make sure what "process" should I be looking for, and I couldn't find MSCONFIG inside Task Scheduler..

I have tried it in 3 different power plugs. After being plugged in it doesn't open, but the light on the front is blinking and it is making some noise. After hitting eject button and closing it, then it opens constantly again.
It must not be the SATA cable because I have tried it without one even plugged in and it opens still.
There is nothing strange in "Processes" or in the MSCONFIG startup. Only thing I see in there I am not sure what it is is "hpsysdrv Application".
The user may not need it again for a while, but it this is for pride now.

Some drives have firmware, and need to be updated. Just a thought.

Test the drives on other computers to see if it still happens, then you should be able to tell if it is the drive or motherboard.
